Well, Tim Gunn may have all that time, but that’s basically his job. For the rest of the world, that’s simply not an option. Fashion is at best a hobby and even then, it’s done superficially and hastily. Ain’t nobody got time for that, if you get the reference. Luckily, the rest of the world can rest just a bit because there is a little thing called cheating. And no, it has nothing to do with cheating on your partner and we do not encourage such behavior. The cheating refers to the whole style upgrading thing.

It’s not really cheating as it is not forbidden so another way to call it is simply using tricks and shortcuts to make the best you can with the least amount of effort. As often is in life, the trick with fashion is in the details. A small detail can easily ruin your whole life, just like a small detail can ruin your whole outfit, your style in general and eventually your life. Does this mean that a bad style decision can come back to bite you in the ass? You can bet your sweet behind it does.

Put the cherry on top

Usually putting the cherry on top is the finishing move that makes a great thing even better, but in this case, it’s the opening argument. It still makes a great thing better, and that thing is you (wink). A hat is the true representative of what a proper style trick should be – it’s easy to wear, almost anyone can pull it off and it increases your style indefinitely…if chosen correctly. If not, you are on your way to a world of shame, pain and humiliation. Okay, maybe not so much, but you can really screw up your outfit with a bad hat.

A fedora is usually the first choice of youngsters and hipsters among them. That also means it’s the most boring one or at least that it has turned into a most boring hat in the last twenty years. A much better solution is to go for another classic which is not seen all that much and that is a panama hat. Made famous by Ernest Hemingway, Panama hat is a timeless classic among hats, a symbol of laid back fishermen and a truly iconic piece of headwear. It goes great with almost any casual outfit but it can be incorporated in semi-formal attire, as well. A straw Panama hat should possibly be left for that vacation to Cuba that’s been on standby for so long.

If Panama is not your cup of tea, an old English classic might be. Naturally, we talk about flat caps, which originated in England, but quickly caught on in the rest of the world and, most importantly, in USA. When it comes to formality, they are somewhere in between fedoras and Panama hats, but they can still be incorporated with all kinds of styles.

Give some love to your sleeves

While to a nescient bystander sleeves don’t look like a suitable place to do any style improvements, the truth couldn’t be any different. The truth is so different that it is completely opposite. The simplest trick of all involves sleeves and it possibly boosts your style more than anything else on the list; the trick being rolling them up.

Everything looks better with sleeves rolled up, from button-up shirts, across sweaters, all the way to sweatshirts. The only exception might be a suit jacket (or any other jacket or coat for that matter, but people rarely roll up jacket or coat sleeves, so there is no need to mention it). Rolling up the suit jacket sleeves belongs in the 80s, alongside mullets and creepy mustaches.

There is more than one way to roll up the sleeves, with the classic way being the easiest. Just use the cuffs as the measuring device, each time rolling the sleeves as far as the cuffs allow you. Repeat the same motion a few times until you are satisfied with the results.

Forget about belts

You shouldn’t leave your pants on the mercy of gravity, but belts are really not all that noticeable. Much better option is to restrain the pants with suspenders, which not only are retro, but are really having a comeback. They go great with jeans and simple t-shirts, but they can also be worn with any button-up shirt and even with a suit. Moreover, they thrive in combination with a suit and you can even combine them with all kinds of hats to score combo style points. Try a combination of Panama hat, suspenders, striped t-shirt, cool chinos and some fancy brogue shoes. You won’t regret it.

Remember the details

The last and smallest detail in this abundance of stylish improvements is the lowest of them all – socks. Much like sleeves, socks are the underdog in this fight, but they can really do some damage…well, damage in a positive kind of way. If you choose your socks properly, you can easily crank your outfit up a few notches and the trick is to be original.

Since it’s hard to be completely original these days, you should stay within the boundaries of reason. Don’t try weird combinations, like wearing only one sock or wearing socks and sandals. That kind of thinking will get you nowhere. However, by bringing color in the sock department, you can accomplish a lot with what slowly turns into a morning routine. The only thing left to do is completely redesign your wardrobe department containing socks, by getting rid of all your boring socks and substituting them with all the patterns and colors you like.
